Mad Season 1

The four part Mad Season podcast hosted by Matt Pinfield tells the story of this Seattle supergroup and their one album, Above.  Mike McCready (Pearl Jam), Barrett Martin (Streaming Trees) and the late Layne Staley (Alice in Chains) describe how McCready’s rehab stint with late bassist Jon Baker Saunders inspired this acclaimed side project. 

Songs in the series include their mid-90s radio hits “River of Deceit,” “I Don’t Know Anything,” and newly released live recordings featured on the Above Deluxe 2cd Reissue in stores now from Legacy Recording.  You’ll also her “Locomotive,” featuring Mark Lanegan on brand new vocals laid over a previously unfinished instrumental track.  Matt Pinfield hosts.

The Wilson sisters look back on their musical education at home, from playing ukeleles with their parents to seeing the Beatles on TV and wanting guitars.  Ann also details how she developed her voice from her early days in Ann Wilson & the Daybreaks (including a taste of their 1969 recording “Through Eyes and Glass”), through joining the band that became Heart.  You also hear early demos of “Crazy on You” and “Magic Man,” as included on the Strange Euphoria box set. Janis Joplin Pearl 3

Our third episode is all about evolutions. In a very rare interview clip (courtesy of Laura Joplin) the late producer, Paul Rothchild, discusses how Janis grew as a vocalist during the sessions. It then concludes with a montage of “Move Over” takes to show how that final track came together.

Other music from The Pearl Sessions includes clips of “Trust Me,” “Me and Bobby McGee,” and “Half Moon.”

When Janis Joplin knew what she wanted, there was very little that could stop her from getting it. With her music, she pushed and experimented until it felt just right. Her fourth and final album – Pearl – showed Janis at the top of her game, working hard with a new band and new ways to use her voice.

In this four part podcast series you’ll hear about Janis’ final years and the making of Pearl from her sister and author Laura Joplin, road manager John Byrne Cooke, Pearl producer, the late Paul Rothchild and author Holly George Warren.
