“90 Millas, which means 90 miles, is the distance between the most southernmost point of the United States in Key West and Cuba. For us Cubans, 90 miles is very representative of not just a distance in miles, but a distancing of intellectual, emotional, spiritual proportions, because it’s really…it doesn’t matter what the distance is, we’re separated from our homeland. So, for us it was kind of like saying, okay this is a distance but nothing can separate us from out cultural and musical heritage. It’s still very much alive in us.” - Gloria Estefan.
Gloria Estefan worked with many of the artists responsible for this progress to create the new arrangements of Cuban classics featured on 90 Millias. Candido Camero, Israel “Cachao” Lopez, Generoso Jimenez, Paquito D’Rivera, Sal Cuevas, Paquito Hechevarria and Nelson Gonzalez join Estefan to discuss the history, present and future of their musical roots.
On the first of three podcast episodes, Ms. Estefan and special guests tell the musical story of Cuba. Bernadette Peters hosts.
